While we've had the chance to get brief tastes of th e forthcoming game at the past two E 3s and Tokyo Game Shows, Sega hasn't done much to give us a feel for wha t the proper game is going to be. Th ankfully, we finally got our hands o n a work-in-progress version of the game and have been able to log in a good chunk of time with the first th ree chapters in the single-player ga me. As longtime fans of the series s ince its days as a simple 2D Genesis RPG and through its evolution into a groundbreaking online RPG, we've b een curious to see what's next for t he series. The three chapters we've played through so far haven't cement ed our opinion just yet, but one thi ng's for sure: Phantasy Star Univers e is definitely changing things up f or the franchise.To those who haven' t followed the Phantasy Star series, don't sweat it. While you probably should have played some of the previ ous entries in the series as they're quite cool, knowledge of the previo us games isn't a requirement for PSU . The original game draws most heavi ly on the look and feel of the last two good entries in the PS series Ph antasy Star Online (yes, we're gloss ing over ファンタシースターオンライン Episod e III C.A.R.D. Revolution). However, as far as story goes, PSU is its ow n unique beast. The game's single-pl ayer experience casts you as Ethan W aber, a 17-year-old kid who, when we meet him in the game's first chapte r, is, frankly, a bit of a punk. How ever, Mr. Personality gets an attitu de adjustment when an alien attack e ndangers his sister Lamia. Despite h is unexplained hostility to the loca l law enforcement, known as the Guar dians, Ethan winds up working with o ne so that he can help his sister. A s he makes his way to help her, he h as a change of heart about the Guard ians and decides to become one.The r emaining chapters we played find Eth an finishing up his enlistment proce ss by engaging in some field work wi th fellow cadet Ryu Hyuga and his te acher, Karen Nerra. In the midst of his training, Ethan gets a better un derstanding of the trouble caused by the mysterious and hostile aliens, called the Seed, who attacked at the game's start and are continuing to stir things up. It seems the unfrien dly E.T.'s are causing all sorts of trouble by mutating wildlife and gen erally disrupting the natural order of life in the Gurhal solar system. As if all that wasn't enough, the cr eatures appear to share a bond with the mysterious ruins of an ancient c ivilization.At present the story is obviously setting things upso a lot of questions are being raised, and i nformation on Ethan and his crew is being laid out to give you an idea o f what they're all about. So we now know that the chip on Ethan's should er toward the Guardians is due to th e fact that his father used to be a member and died while on duty. His t eacher, Karen, is the same age, havi ng become a Guardian at 14, and is a n orphan. On the more shallow front, Ryu is a walking hormone who tries to pick up anything female. We expec t the unlikely trio to bond as the g ame progresses.As far as the gamepla y goes, PSU is taking a fairly rigid linear path, like most old-school R PGs. The story unfolds via a copious amount of cinematics that pop up as you play. At present, Ethan operate s out of a Guardian colony in space- -a massive five-floor city that serv es as a hub. Besides housing the Gua rdian barracks where Ethan lives, th e colony features shuttles to the pl anets in the system, which you can o nly access if your license is cleare d for travel to that particular loca tion. At the moment we've been ventu ring to the planet Parum, which is w here the first three chapters take p lace. Parum's main city features its own regional Guardian base, as well as several different shops and usef ul spots like the flyer base, which you'll visit to select missions and travel to their specific locations o n the planet. The game is broken up into seriallike chapters, complete w ith narration to set up and close th e action, which play out roughly the same. 	Phantasy Star Universe Beta - Dragon Fight This was the third time Kyori, Aero, and myself (Parn) fought the dragon . The first two times we made an at tempt, we spent a lot of time doing melee attacks up close in old-school ファンタシースターオンライン style, and got humbled both times. Third time's a charm... mixing in ranged and melee at the appropriate times is the way to go. You can tell that I was sti ll getting used to the controls, heh .
